Soller and Port de Soller

Location

Soller is both a town and a municipality, stretching for around 44 km.  It is situated in the middle of the Sierra de Tramuntana mountain range, on the west coast of Mallorca. The area around Soller is stunning, dominated by the impressive "Puig Mayor", mountain - the highest mountain in Majorca. Several kilometers away is situated the beautiful Port de Soller (Puerto de Soller). With its enclosed bay and mountainous backdrop it is true to say that property for sale in Port de Soller (Puerto de Soller) certainly commands the higher prices on the island. Nearby, is the village of Forlanutx which offers great property to buy.

Description

The town of Soller is around 3km from Puerto de Soller , which, as the name suggests, acts not only as a resort, but was the original harbour for the town. The two are linked together by the famous “Orange Express” tram, (better known as the “Tren de Soller”), the only working tram on the island and almost 100 years old. 

The beach at Soller is quite small with hardly any facilities, so only true sun worshippers tend to use it.  The area is most popular with middle aged couples, and those who use the town as a base for their walking holiday in the Sierra de Tramuntana mountains. 

Of particular interest are the two neighbouring villages of Fornalutx and Biniaraix,both situated at the foot of the "Puig Major". These villages are literally “the land that time forgot”, with little having changed over the last century; cultures and traditions still being very much in evidence here.

Today, tourism plays a large part in bringing in revenue for the town, supplemented by the agricultural industry; citrus and olive growing being big business .  Property investment has also taken off, with both foreigners and Spaniards buying up old properties in Soller and modernising them before selling them at a profit.

The centre of the town, the Plaça Constitució is surrounded by cafés and has a fountain.  Elsewhere, famous landmarks include the church of Sant Bartomeu and the Banco de Sóller, a twentieth century construction.

Despite being one of the prettiest and most famous towns in Mallorca, property for sale in Soller is actually quite reasonably priced.  A five bedroom finca in Soller will normally reach a price of around €1,000,000. However, properties for sale in and overlooking the Port de Soller are considerably more expensive. If you can find it, the property for sale in Fornalutx is quite exquisite and is said to be one of the most beautiful villages in Europe.
