Sant Josep and Sant Agusti

Pretty, prosperous and easy-going Sant Josep (San Jose) has a delightful setting, 200m above sea level in a valley overlooked by the green, forested, slopes of Sa Talaiassa. It is not far from San Antonio.

Description

The village itself is of no great size, but it is the main settlement in the region. There’s a tidy, trim self-confidence here, best illustrated along the attractive, pint-sized high street and around the exquisite little central plaza just to the west, where the Moorish-style tiled benches are shaded by pines. From this plaza you have an excellent view across the main road to the imposing, whitewashed Esglesia de Sant Josep, dating from 1726. The church has a superb three-storey facade, with triple-arched porch that extends out from the main body of the building. It is only open for Mass, but if you do get to take capacious, delightfully cool interior, check out the wooden pulpit, painted with scenes from the life of Christ - a reproduction of the eighteenth century piece destroyed when the church was gutted in the Spanish Civil War.

About three kilometres north of Sant Josep, the pretty hilltop village of Sant Agusti is so tranquil that all signs of life seem to have been frazzled by the Mediterranean sun.

Grouped around the fortified church at the heart of the settlement are clump of old farmhouses, one of which has been beautifully converted into the restaurant, there’s also a village bar, a solitary store and an ancient stone defence tower where the locals once hid from pirates. Captivating views across the hilly interior of the island and down to the southwest coast can be seen from the little plaza next to the landmark Esglesia de Sant Agusti, completed in the early nineteenth century. Designed by the Spanish architect Pedro Criollez, this simple rectangular structure has a stark, whitewashed facade, but lacks the frontal porch typical of Ibizan churches.
