Location

Description

Palma is a bustling yet cultural city, with around 400,000 permanent inhabitants.  Indeed, almost half of the total population of Mallorca live in Palma and the Spanish royal family spend every summer here.  

In the 1950s, the tourist industry began to change not just Palma, but the Balearics in general, attracting workers from mainland Spain. From then on, Palma grew significantly.

Despite the growth of mass tourism, Palma has managed to retain its culture, heritage and history, one of the most famous landmarks in the city being the seventeenth century cathedral of La Seu, previously built on a mosque. 

Somewhat less obvious but nevertheless fascinating is the area of The Old City of Palma, located behind the Cathedral.  These are a winding maze of streets with a strong Arab influence. Most streets in Mallorca are pedestrianised but these ones in particular can easily transport you back in time, they are so peaceful and full of character.  All around you, you will see some superb examples of architecture across the centuries. There are many historical buildings which are private dwellings yet open to the public, nevertheless.  Also in the Old City is the renowned Town Hall building and the Convent of the Cathedral.   

One of the most historically and architecturally interesting buildings in Palma, the Arab Baths are situated near the Convent of the Cathedral, This small building dates back to the 11th century and it is thought that it was once part of the home of a Muslim nobleman.

Away from the culture and history, Palma is a vibrant, cosmpolitan city with a multitude of fashionable boutiques, chic wine bars and a whole host of restaurants and clubs.  Few cities manage to integrate modern with traditional, but Palma has indeed managed to do this, avoiding the pitfalls of complying with mass tourism and instead forming the cultural centre of the island of Mallorca.
