Manacor

Location

Manacor is both a town and municipal district, located on the eastern coast of Mallorca, covering approximately 260km.

Description

One of the biggest municipalities in Mallorca, Manacor plays host to several important tourist resorts.

Dating back to Roman times, the town itself is famous for the manufacture of both furniture and artificial pearls.  Pearls have been created in Manacor since 1897 and can be bought in the busy street market, held every Monday morning.

Most of the land around here is cultivated, with almond trees, fig trees, carob trees and vineyards dotted around the region.

A very traditional town, Manacor is fairly sizeable with around 30,000 inhabitants.  Its narrow streets and large Gothic church give indications of its history, although it is not considered to be one of the prettier towns in Mallorca.

Manacor is undergoing development, however.  There has been considerable investment made within the town, which now boasts great shopping, sports facilities and culture, boosted by the tourism industry which has sprung up here in recent years.  There are now a number of hotels, bars and restaurants and many of the area’s beaches have been awarded Blue Flag status.
