Property for sale in Deià

Location

On the whole, property for sale in Deia is absolutely delightful! Deià is a small village built on a hill in the valley in the middle of the Serra de Tramuntana mountains  on the north west coast of Mallorca, around half an hour drive from Palma and 10km from Sóller.  Above the valley towers  the “Teix”, the second highest mountain on Mallorca. This town and its surroundings are trully beautiful, it is therefore understandable that if you wish to buy a property for sale in Deia the prices will reflect this.

Description

The small municipality surrounding Deià (around six square miles) has been settled since prehistoric times and remants of its history are still visible in the form of its Archaeological Museum and its church’s Parroquial Museum.  It was originally a farming community, with terraces and irrigation systems having been carved into the surrounding hillsides somewhere in between the 10th and 13th centuries, principally growing olive trees (which still grow there), oranges and lemons.   Each household was given its own irrigated area for growing produce but later, as the village began to grow and because it was sheltered, it developed a small fishing industry.  The village itself sits on the hill, overlooked by its beautiful church.  It then drops down into the valley below.

In the 1800s, tourists began to visit the village, which grew in popularity.  Nowadays, there is a permanent population of around 650 people, although this grows considerably in the summer months, boosted by the number of tourists who are attracted by Deià’s charm.

Making the most of this additional revenue, Deia has managed to facilitate tourists without becoming commercialised.  There are a few small shops, restaurants and hotels, although entertainment is unsurprisingly hotel-based.

Many cultural figures have become residents of Deià over the years, including Princess Diana, Bob Geldof  and Andrew Lloyd Webber.
