Binissalem

Location

Set in the region known as Raiguer, Binissalem is located in the heart of Mallorca, only a few kilometres from Palma.

Description

A quaint, traditional village with only around 5000 permanent residents, Binissalem is without doubt known for its famous wines, its 400 hectares of vineyards protected from the cold wind by the Sierra Tramuntana mountains.  The grapes are picked at the end of September, triggering the ever-popular Fiesta of La Vermada, which attracts crowds of Mallorcans.  

One of the main landmarks within the village itself is the fifteenth century imposing Gothic Santa Maria of Robines church, which still plays a great part in the lives of the Binissalamers.  Tourism has not yet reached this part of Mallorca, so there is still a strong sense of tradition and charm about the place.  This in turn has attracted a number of investors interested in buying property in Binissalem, prompted by the village being declared a historic-artistic site by the Municipal Government of the Balearic Islands in 1983, protecting it from future development.

The close knit community within the village means that it is a relatively safe area, with a particularly low crime rate.  There are a few small shops, bars and restaurants in the village square but only one or two hotels and a supermarket – just enough to sustain a small village, without really catering for any tourists, which only adds to its charm.

Property for sale in Binissalem

There are several grand houses in Binissalem, built for the nobility of the time and situated beside the church.  Elsewhere, property tends to take the form of rural fincas.  Because this is one of the few remaining, genuinely Mallorcan villages in existence, demand for houses in Binissalem is high, pushing up property prices.  As a guideline, a typical three bedroom finca would fetch in excess of €1m.
